Balance the valued benefits of a brand typeface with the intention to clarify and improve legibility for RNIB clients.
The Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) is a UK charity offering information, support and advice to almost two million people in the UK with sight loss. RNIB and design consultancy Purple, commissioned Fontsmith to create a headline title font that was both visually distinctive and yet adhered to accessible guidelines and boundaries.
Applying our knowledge base of accessibility in typeface design (gained from our experience and discussions with research groups in developing the Mencap typeface – FS Me) we set about applying accessible principles to the RNIB headline alphabet. Identity consultants Purple had a clear branded font style in mind; a strong modular rounded form that complemented the icons and imagery used throughout other aspects of the brand. The challenge for us was to balance the valued benefits of a branded typeface with the intention to clarify and improve legibility for RNIB’s clients.
The typeface along with illustrations, colours and copyrighting has created a distinctive branded campaign for RNIB. This proves yet again that good design and accessible fonts don’t have to imply awkward or patronising results. The new RNIB is inclusive of all members of their audience.
