During Glug London’s 2019 Thinking Big event we invited attendees to join us in the Fontsmith ‘Letter Lab’ to create and submit some experimental letterforms.
Our plan was to challenge attendees to draw and experiment with letterforms using a lucky dip system of picking typographic variables and challenging ways of drawing them. We would then take a selection of these letters and transform them into an experimental typeface.
After being inundated with over 150 entries it was a tough time to narrow down the submissions. Designers from agencies and brands, illustrators, sign painters, calligraphers, copywrighters and students all got involved.
Eventually we settled on 54 of our favourites that we have now transformed into ‘Glug Irregular’, a wonderfully offbeat and experimental typeface perfect for use on your next ransom note.
Two versions of each letter were included in the font and can alternate when the OpenType feature ‘contextual alternates’ is switched on.
If you attended the event, check out the character set below to see if you made the cut.
