All about Sally...

Simple, modern and unique.
FS Sally is a graceful typeface. A refreshingly simple design that offers a crafted elegant finish to display and text typographies. Modern in its transitional style but with a hint of the classic. Sally enables its forms to sit with a distinctive aplomb in both small and large amounts of text.

Asymmetric, fluid and rhythmic.
FS Sally’s serifed feet and shoulders are classic but asymmetric in design. The bracketed juxtaposition of this serif which curves-in at the shoulder and out at the foot was conceived as a subtle device for subliminally guiding the eye throughout each letterform. This lends the type a rhythm that is further enhanced by the energetic flicked feet of the roman ‘a’, ‘d’ and ‘u’. Sally’s italic forms ooze fluidity with a pen-like feel that retains the formal constraints required for a text type.

Proportional, open and economic.
FS Sally has a reasonably large x-height and moderate length ascenders and descenders. These proportions, when combined with open letterforms and a moderate aperture create an efficient and compact definition of word shapes.

A bookish display contrast.
A moderate to high stroke contrast is balanced for both a display and bookish feel. This contrast and proportion delivers a rounded shading that has a robust definition at both text and display sizes.

The fitting of line and colour.
FS Sally’s slightly condensed but open counter forms have been fitted with space efficiency in mind. This fitting runs comfortably with an even texture alongside the classic type designs of the past whilst offering a fresh atmosphere to a text.

Small capitals.
FS Sally has a complete set of small capitals and corresponding punctuation marks that are useful for setting:
- Headlines
- Running headings
- Setting abbreviations and acronyms
- Setting the the first word of a new chapter
- Giving emphasis within texts

Figures.
FS Sally has four sets of figures. The tabular lining figures are set as default and run at capital height.
The old-style or text figures run at x-height. Here are a few tips on the setting of numerals:
- When using four or more numerals, insert commas. i.e 28,329 / 5,894
- When representing an approximate date use the fewest numerals possible and use an en-rule. i.e 1931–2
- In descriptive matter numbers under 100 should be written in words.

Ligatures.
LIke all solid text types, FS Sally has a set of both standard and discretionary ligatures that add typographic style without compromising the readability of flowing text. The standard ligatures should be active by default within your software.

Family weights and application.
The FS Sally family consists of five weights in both roman and italic design. Sally’s regular is elegant in display and is a comfortable read in extended texts. The medium weight is a subtle step up from the regular. It was created in order to deliver a slightly stronger colour and finish in poorer printing conditions. Sally’s semibold delivers an excellent contrast to the regular in smaller text sizes. At large sizes it has an intermediate feel that applies to use in sub-headings, title pages or designs with a calmer temperament. The bold weight is perfect for book and title headings and also works well as a strong contrast to the medium weight in text sizes. The heavy is ideal for poster headlines and word-marks with a fat, bold and punchy execution.
